Fuel consumption depends on many factors which we mentioned in one of our previous video tutorials when we talked about the ways to save on fuel. But did you know that the oil you choose can also contribute to oil savings? What if we told you that if your car consumes 8,5l of fuel every 100 km, you can save up to 500l of fuel yearly?*

Fuel saving lubricants have been present on the market for some time, however, due to lack of information many car owner still have doubts about these products. In this article, as an example we are taking fuel saving lubricants that Total has developed under the name Fuel Economy (FE).

Before we begin, it is very important to understand what Fuel Economy concept means. In its essence, Fuel Economy means more kilometers, less environmental impact. Greater economy in fuel consumption is achieved by better protection of the engine against wear and improving its performance in comparison to conventional oils. Better engine protection means extending engine life and service interval. Fuel Economy concept is being used today for various types of vehicles such as cars, heavy goods vehicles, industrial machinery etc. In the text that follows, we hope to clear some of the most frequent doubts related to this type of product.

Do Fuel Economy oils maintain their character throughout the oil change interval?

Yes. Fuel Economy oils are exposed to the same driving conditions as conventional motor oils and maintain their character until the next oil change.

Will I lose the constructor’s warranty if a problem occurs while I use Fuel Economy oil?

No. Total Fuel Economy motor oils are approved by the vehicle constructors. Performance levels of these oils are defined by the same constructors. The approvals shown on the bottle guarantee the same quality as conventional oils with the same approvals.

Does using Fuel Economy lubricants mean greater oil consumption?

No. Tests have shown that oil consumption is very close to that of conventional oils. Laboratory measurements of oil volatility show that the volatility of Fuel Economy oils is almost the same as the volatility of conventional oils.

Does greater fluidity of Fuel Economy oils mean greater engine wear?

No. Some people tend to believe that more fluid oils do not lubricate enough and therefore do not protect the engine enough. However, Total’s Fuel Economy oils prove the opposite. Total Fuel Economy oils cover all levels of performance defined in accordance with international specifications and are approved by car manufacturers, with the same warranties of conventional grades. 

Are Fuel Economy oils more expensive than conventional oils?

No. Total has perfected the technology to such extent as to be able to offer this type of products at very competitive prices. The price of a Fuel Economy product is very similar to that of conventional oil, at the same time offering much greater benefit.
