The clutch set contains 3 key components: the clutch plate, the pressure plate, and the clutch release bearing. These elements are connected to the flywheel which transmits the rotation of the engine crankshaft to the wheels.

Practically all factors that cause clutch plate wear are those which lead to pressure plate malfunction because these two elements are in constant contact.
Malfunction of the clutch release bearing usually manifests as howling or hooting. The most common causes are sudden releases of the clutch pedal and resting your foot on it.

One less common, but possible breakdown that can occur in a car with a mechanical clutch is the snapping of the clutch cable, especially if the car is older than 10 years. Cars with hydraulic clutches do not have this cable, but one needs to keep an eye on the hydraulic brake fluid level because not having enough of this fluid in the system means you will not be able to keep driving.
